BUNAC
2008 programme now closed.

Placement options

Most students work in one of the following areas;

  • Kitchens: preparing, cooking or serving food, cleaning tables, collecting dishes, pot washing, dishwashing
  • General maintenance: mowing lawns, collecting rubbish, painting, simple building repairs
  • Housekeeping: bunks and washrooms, chambermaid-type work and general chores
  • Laundry: collecting, washing, drying and delivering laundry, ensuring laundry area is clean and tidy
  • Office work: word processing, answering the phone, reception duties and general office job

You are placed in a support role in camp according to your skills, preferences and experience. Previous work experience is an advantage for any position but essential for maintenance, office and kitchen work. The sooner you send in your application, the more placements will be available to you. As more and more vacancies start to fill, you will need to keep more of an open mind and be prepared to be more flexible.

You are also advised to get your application in early if you want to be placed on the same camp as friends.

Orientations

To ensure that you are as fully prepared as possible for a summer on camp, you need to attend a BUNAC Orientation before you leave for the US. These take place around the UK from March to April. Dates and venues will be available in early 2008.

You will also have an orientation once you arrive at camp; this can last from one day to one week, depending on your camp. This orientation could include; preparing the camp, getting to know your role, the camp and the other staff before the children arrive.

Different types of camps

Most BUNAC participants are placed at camps in picturesque lakeside settings in the Northeast and New England. You may however be placed in the southeast, the Midwest, Texas, on the west coast and in Canada.

All camps strive for a team of dedicated support staff. You do have an opportunity to tell us which type of camp you would prefer to go to, but the more flexible you can be, the greater your chances of placement.

The camps where we place staff have high standards and are approved by the American Camping Association or similar accrediting bodies. Depending on your skills and experience, it’s likely that you will be placed on one of the types of camps listed here.
