BUNAC

Work and Accommodation

Through Work America you can do almost any kind of work, absolutely anywhere in the 50 states of America! Choose the beach life of an east coast resort, the mountains ‘out west,’ gentle suburbia or one of the fast paced cities.

Most students take casual vacation jobs in the tourism or hospitality industries which typically include amusement park operators, waiters or waitresses, shop assistants, chambermaids and bar staff. But, with a little effort and perseverance, previous participants have managed to find jobs such as these:

  • Working on a fish trawler in Alaska
  • White-water rafting guide
  • Production assistant for a play festival
  • Caddie on a Californian golf course
  • Landscape Gardener in New York City
  • Bar Tender in Hawaii
  • Internships for companies including Vogue, CISCO, New York University and many more

Once you have found a job

You must ensure your employer notifies BUNAC of the details of your job. Ask them to complete and return the Employer Job Form (.pdf) to you, then complete the participant section on the form before returning it to BUNAC; after having taken a copy for yourself.

Job Directory

You can apply to Work America with or without a job. However, if you are a first-time applicant and wish to arrange your own flight, then you must pre-arrange work before your visa forms can be requested.

BUNAC recommends that all participants arrange a job before they leave the UK.

Pre-arranging work gives you peace of mind knowing you have work lined up and in which part of America. You also won’t have to wait too long for your first pay cheque!

BUNAC’s Job Directory can help you in your job search and is an easy way to find casual summer work in the US. In addition to 100s of job listings, it includes:

  • The do’s and don'ts of job hunting
  • Practical advice on finding accommodation
  • Tips on writing a résumé (CV)
  • Post-work travel ideas.

Available now and free of charge, the Directory is the best resource you’ll have for finding work. Simply apply for any listed job in the same way you’d apply to a job in the UK.

Other ways of finding work in the US include using personal contacts, searching on the internet or writing to UK companies with branches in America.
